Net Zero 2040
Supporting Your Low-Carbon Goals
The Net Zero by 2040 ambition was established to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in areas where direct influence and measurable progress are possible. The target focuses on Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, covering emissions from owned or controlled sources and emissions related to purchased energy.
At the time the target was defined, Scope 3 emissions were not included. These emissions occur across the value chain and are largely influenced by supplier operations, infrastructure availability, and client procurement choices. While they fall outside direct operational control, their impact is recognised as significant.
Progress toward Net Zero depends on several external conditions. A key factor is access to renewable energy infrastructure, including district heating with a full renewable energy share. While this lies partly beyond direct control, expectations and dialogue with energy providers remain an important part of the transition.
Another critical factor is the transition toward climate neutral transport. Today, this remains limited by available technology and infrastructure. Achieving meaningful reductions requires a broader shift away from fossil fuels toward electric mobility and future climate neutral fuel alternatives for both employee travel and product transport.
Alongside these dependencies, continuous efforts focus on improving energy efficiency, increasing the share of renewable energy, and strengthening engagement with suppliers. Future steps include improved data quality, deeper collaboration across the value chain, and the gradual integration of Scope 3 considerations as conditions and solutions mature.
The Net Zero by 2040 ambition reflects a pragmatic approach to climate responsibility, balancing measurable action today with transparency about the challenges and limitations that shape long-term progress.
